Only one of Khaleda's 16 poll pledges fulfilled in Khulna
Most people of Khulna are not pleased with Khaleda Zia as most of her 2001 election pledges are yet to be fulfilled.
The BNP chief contested from Khulna-2 constituency (Sadar-Sinadanga) in an apparent bid to bury intra-party feud. She won a landslide victory by defeating the Awami League candidate.
Begum Khaleda Zia made 16 pledges during her polls campaign in 2001 for socio-economic development of Khulna.
But the government of her four-party alliance did not fulfill 15 out of 16 pledges.
"She made a lot of promises but forgot tham all after the election," alleged a voter of Khulna-2.
The lone pledge her government fulfilled is upgrading 25-bed Khulna Medical College Hospital to a 500-bed one. But it is yet to be provided with necessary manpower to run properly, sources at the hospital said.
The unfulfilled pledges include supply of pipeline gas, modernisation of Mongla Port, construction of a 250 magawatt Power plant, establishment of an IT village, construction of residential quarters for workers at Sonadanga, development of communications, setting up of a separate industrial town, development of slum areas, completion of unfinished work of Khanjahan Ali Airport, a tourist spot in the Sundarbans, a cadet college, nationalisation of two high schools, development of Khulna divisional women's sports complex and construction of a modern park.
"The government of four-party alliance betrayed with the people of Khulna during its five-year rule and crippled economic backbone of south-western region by not providing necessary funds for development".
"Besides, its lawmakers were busy building their own fortunes, instead of doing welfare-oriented work", said Sheikh Abdul Kayyum, chairperson of Khulna Citizen's Forum.
So, the unfulfilled pledges of Khaleda Zia will have an adverse impact on polls results of four-party candidates in the region, he said.
