Bangladeshi artists have carved a niche in the international art circuit. They are now receiving international exposure and participating in various competitions. Our young painters are now experimenting with new themes and techniques. Berger Young Painters' Art Competition encourages this trend through awarding talented upcoming artists. The award was introduced in 1996 and since then it has been successfully conferred to deserving artists every year.
Prize-giving ceremony of the 13th Berger Young Painter's Art Competition was held at the Hall of Fame (Plenary Hall), Bangladesh China Friendship Convention Centre on November 27.
The first phase of the programme saw the lifetime achievement award (posthumous) going to late painter and sculptor Abdur Razzaque. Razzaque's immense contribution and dedication to art was recalled at the programme.
An interesting aspect of the event was veteran artistes and teachers -- Rafiquan Nabi, Hashem Khan, Mahmudul Haque, Abdus Shakoor Shah, Rokeya Sultana, Mohammad Eunus and Dilara Begum Joly -- announcing the names of the winners and giving away the crests. Rupali Chowdhury, managing director of Berger Paints Bangladesh Ltd and Moshiul Karim, advisor of Berger Paints also gave away crests to the winners.
Md Azmol Hossain received the first prize; Mamur Ahsan Mahtab came second; Md Mainuddin snatched the third position; Md Khurshed Nizami came fourth; Bishwajit Goswami fifth and Md Selim Hossain secured the sixth position.
The award-giving programme was followed by live music. This year's selected paintings will be displayed at Zainul Gallery, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka from December 1 to 5. A number of noted painters, architects, engineers, developers, academics, social activists and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
