Set up nat'l commission for biotechnology

Speakers urge govt

Speakers at a dialogue yesterday underscored the need for encouraging the use of biotechnology to make the country's position stronger in the global revolution of its use.
They called on the government to set up a separate national commission for biotechnology and making the National Institute of Biotechnology more dynamic.
The speakers said this at the national-level dialogue organised by Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologist at the National Press Club in the city.
Media personality Shykh Siraj moderated the dialogue.
They also urged the government to include biotechnology in the school and college-level syllabuses to make it popular among the students.
Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, Brac Executive Director Dr Mahbub Hossen, BARI DG Dr Harunur Rashid and GNOBB Moderator Dr Ahmad S Islam spoke at the dialogue.
Shykh Siraj said recent information revealed that biotechnology has increased the total revenue income of the world by 12.9 percent, adding that biotechnology can help the country in future if it is used perfectly.
Three papers were presented at the programme on 'Biotechnology in agricultural improvement' by Abu Ashfaqur Sajib, lecturer of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology department at DU, 'Biotechnology: For environment' by Miraj Kobad Chowdhury, lecturer of the same department, and another lecturer of the department Nazlee Sharmin presented 'Biotechnology in medical science'.
