Four fairs within March abroad to boost export
A local event management firm engaged in organising international fair said yesterday it would arrange four exhibitions in Middle East and Europe within March next year to promote Bangladeshi products aboard and boost exports.
The first fair will be held during November 26-28, 2008 in Dubai, said Dhaka International Exhibition Company (DIEC) Ltd, the organising firm, at a press conference in the capital.
The others will be organised from January 8-10, 2009 in Bahrain, February 25-28 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and March 28-31 in Rome, Italy.
“We want to help build the image of our country and boost exports. Our mission is to earn foreign currency by exporting even a fistful of ash. We believe the fairs will help our manufacturers explore new markets abroad,” said Enayet Karim, managing director of DIEC.
DIEC, which claimed to have arranged five such fairs in Denmark, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia since its inception last year, made the announcement of organising exhibitions abroad at a time when recession fears in the global economy, mainly in the USA and some European countries, looms large.
In Bangladesh, exports of garment, one of the main engines of the economy, are also feared to be affected due to the recession fear and slump in consumer spending in the West.
“Against this backdrop, if we can show off our products repeatedly, we may attract more foreign buyers,” said Karim.
He said there is a huge potential of Bangladeshi garment items in ME region.
“Our garments are found in the Middle East countries. These products are usually being re-exported there from other countries,” he said.
Karim said Bangladeshi banks and financial institutions, real estate firms, and companies from such sectors as food and beverage, medicine, garment, handicraft, jute product, and cosmetics will be able to participate in the fairs.
Interested organisations, DIEC said, will have to register by November 20 for Dubai fair, December 15 for Bahrain, December 20 for Saudi Arabia, and by January 31 for Italy show.
Karim expected that around 40 local firms from food and beverage to garment sector would attend the Dubai fair. Excluding plane fare, and food and lodging charges, service sector companies will have to pay $2,000 for stall and visa, while exporters will pay $1500 and women entrepreneurs $800 to take part in the Dubai show.
“We got good response in the previous five exhibitions. Participants in those events also received spot orders,” Karim said.
