Myanmar's stand
The news item titled “Myanmar worked in that area from before?” published in your daily on 10 November has attracted my attention. If that is the case, then what did our Navy/BDR do? They should have noticed it immediately at the time when Myanmar initiated the survey. This is their holy duty to patrol the border areas 24 hours a day to monitor trespassing, smuggling and any other illegal activities.
However, it is clearly understood from the report that it is a deep-rooted scheme designed by Myanmar in collusion with some other countries. We are also responsible for giving those parties the opportunity to be united against our interest. The immediate past BNP-Jamaat alliance government missed the opportunity to link our country with the Asian High Way, bluffing countrymen with a lame excuse that it would allow India a transit. Living in the fool's paradise they had dreamt of building a linkage with Thailand and China through Myanmar. But Myanmar never responded to it. Rather, they are now trying to exploit our resources.
Moreover, the greatest folly to me was disallowing India to import gas from Myanmar through a pipeline over Bangladesh. The alliance government fastened a condition with it that if India would give us transit with Nepal we would allow them to build these gas pipeline in Bangladesh to import gas from Myanmar.
How funny! Without thinking of its greater impact, they just ignored the Indian proposal. It would have created an opportunity for us also to import gas through the same pipeline from Myanmar in case of emergency (soon the situation will come!) and a good amount of revenue could also be earned.
China is much more benefited from Myanmar taking gas from them. So far as I understand, the relation between China and Myanmar are closer than the relation between China and Bangladesh. So they also might have given them a green signal to go ahead to cross the boundary. And obviously South Korea would also be benefited by taking the profit share. So it is our fault to let them come up to this stage.
We have to settle the issue immediately bilaterally. If bilateral negotiation does not work, we should strengthen our relationship with India and China and also with Thailand and South Korea. We should also use our western and middle-eastern friends to influence Myanmar to come to the negotiation table. I hope the matter can be settled amicably. However, if nothing works, WE have to protect our resources at any cost.
At the same time, we should take immediate steps to explore the offshore oil and gas resources. Investigation should also be made to be sure that they are not sucking our gas or oil through any underground rigging. Our Navy and/or BDR should always keep their eyes on our territorial boundary.
