3 die, 12 sick after drinking rectified spirit

Three people died and 12 others became sick Thursday after drinking rectified spirit in different areas of Dhamrai, Dhaka.
The dead were identified as Samsuddin, 52, of Bara Jethail, Khabir Uddin, 37, of Nabagram and Mozammel Haque, 55, of Kawalipara of Dhamrai, police sources said.
Police and family sources said Samsuddin, Mozammel, Khabir, Nizam, Inam Ali, Abed Ali, 40 and 15 others took the rectified spirit and fell sick after an hour.
Samsuddin died at home and Khabir died on the way to a clinic in Savar Thursday afternoon. Mozammel died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital Thursday night, the sources said.
They said Inam Ali and Abed Ali were moved to DMCH from Saturia Upazila Health Complex as their condition deteriorated.
Sources claim that the people died and fell sick after drinking spirit bought from Nitya Gopal Saha of Saturia Bazar and from another place in Amta Bazar.
However, Officer-in-charge of Dhamrai Police Station Chowdhury Tarikul Alam said the victims died after drinking the spirit bought from Nitya Gopal Saha at Saturia Bazar and Khabir's father filed an unnatural death case with the police station in this connection.
