Sidora needs help to face post-Sidr situation
Her name is Sidora.
She was so named as she was born when the severe cyclonic storm Sidr hit Mongla upazila of Bagerhat district on the night of November 15 of last year.
The third child of Tapan Folia and Shukhi Folia, Sidora will be one year old today.
Sidora was born when Sidr ravaged the small cottage of Tapan at Kanainagar which is only 60 kilometre away from the Bay of Bengal and adjacent to the Sundarbans.
“We lost our small cottage, clothes and all other belongings when Sidr attacked Mongla upazila with all its fury, said Shukhi who gave birth to Sidora.
Later, she was shifted to St Mary's Primary School at Kanainagar where hundreds of men, women and children took shelter to save their lives from the onslaught of Sidr.
“Sidora, weighing only five kilograms, has been suffering from malnutrition as I cannot provide her with breast milk due to my poor health, Shukhi said with a heavy heart.
“We did not get relief to meet our need in the most difficult time of our life as Sidr had almost finished us,” she added.
“Now for her healthy growth my sweet daughter needs sufficient food which I cannot provide due to extreme poverty,” said Tapan who is a carpenter by profession.
“Money I earn is very small to cope with the skyrocketing price of essentials,” he added.
“As a result my eldest daughter Ratna, 10, and only son Magan, 8, also remain half-fed very often,” said Tapan with a sigh of grief.
