DU deans' body waits for court order
The deans' committee of Dhaka University yesterday decided to wait for the court order on the complexities of admission prerequisites introduced in the seven departments that disqualify fresh Alim graduates for their admissions.
Social Science Faculty Dean Prof Harun-or-Rashid said, “As the issue has already reached the court, we have decided to wait until the court order comes on the issue. If the order does not come before distributing subjects of the concern units, the issue would be resolved through discussion in the general admission committee.”
The decision taken by the deans' committee is logical and the DU authorities hope that any kind of unwanted incident would not happen over the issue.
All the deans were present at the meeting with DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof SMA Faiz in the chair, held at the VC office.
On October 26, the High Court (HC) issued a ruling upon the DU authorities to explain why the new admission conditions that disqualify Alim graduates for admission to seven departments should not be declared illegal.
Seven departments -- Bangla, English, International Relations, Mass Communication and Journalism, Women and Gender Studies, Linguistics and Economics -- have set some prerequisites for freshmen enrollment in those departments by which madrasa students would be disqualified.
Meanwhile, madrasa students on Monday threatened to lay a siege to the VC office tomorrow to press home their demands, says a press release.
