Around 100 cultural activists and leaders and activists of left-leaning student bodies under the banner of 'Anti-Aggression Student Forum' tried to hold a demonstration demanding exemplary punishment to Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres for threatening to burn RU cultural activists alive.
At one stage, police charged baton on them when they tried to bring out a rally breaking the barricade.
Police also snatched their banners, sources said.
The injured are BCU RU unit President Abu Sayem, its Vice President Hassan Imam Sagar, Taimur Faruk Tusher, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF) city unit Convener Debashish Roy, BCU activists Sukorna, Farzana and Lisa.
Earlier, they held a brief rally at Gonokpara intersection where the leaders demanded immediate arrest of the Shibir cadres.
They also demanded that the studentship of the culprits responsible be cancelled.
They urged the government to ban religion-based politics on RU campus and ensure security of cultural activists.
Condemning the police attack, the cultural activists threatened to wage a tougher agitation if the university authorities fail to take action against the Shibir cadres immediately.
Ramzan Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) Boalia Police Station, told newsman that they have no permission to hold protest meeting at Zero Point.
