Contempt rule on Prothom Alo editor, publisher, reporter
The High Court yesterday issued a contempt rule on the Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Publisher Mahfuz Anam and reporter Mizanur Rahman Khan for publishing a report on the number of orders passed by the HC benches.
Following a contempt petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer, a division bench of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui issued the rule on them to explain within two weeks why contempt proceedings should not be drawn against them.
The bench also directed them to appear before the HC bench on November 18.
The Prothom Alo carried the report headlined 'Orders in 298 cases passed in 315 minutes' on November 9.
The petitioner of the contempt case, Munshi Ahsan Kabir, alleged that the report has shown disregard and disrespect to the administration of justice by the High Court.
The report has shaken public confidence in the judiciary and brought the administration of justice by the High Court into disrepute, he said, adding that this type of report is a contemptuous offence.
