MV Akram to be preserved as Liberation War memorial
The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has taken decision to preserve recently salvaged MV Akram, a ship used by Pakistan occupation forces during the Liberation War, at Chandpur.
The large ship carrying food for the Pakistan army was sunk by explosion of a mine set by freedom fighters led by Momin Ullah Patwary Bir Pratik, on October 30 night in 1971 at London Ghat in Dakatia River near Chandpur river port.
To find ways to preserve the ship as a Liberation War memorabilia, Liberation War ministry on Monday held a meeting with Mushfiqur Rahman, joint secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs in the chair.
The meeting attended by representatives of deputy commissioners of Chandpur and Narayanganj, Chandpur paurasava Mayor Md Nasiruddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, Muktijuddha Smriti Sangsad, officials of BIWTA, Army and Navy took decision to preserve the ship at Chandpur after necessary reforms and return of the purchase value to the company that bought the ship.
A private company that bought the sunken ship, salvaged it on October 13 after efforts for nine months, took it to Narayanganj on October 14 night.
People from all walks of life demanded that the government preserve the ship at Chandpur.
