Jahurul, Faisal sparkle
Centuries continued to flow in the fifth round matches of the 10th National Cricket League with Rajshahi opener Jahurul Islam and Chittagong middle-order batsman Faisal Hossain yesterday joining Tushar Imran and Nasiruddin Faruque who had celebrated their tons on the opening day of the four-day matches.
Jahurul and Faisal both swung the matches their ways from the oppositions as Rajshahi and Chittagong at close of second day, having ensured handsome first-innings lead, took firm control.
Barisal were also in the driving seat against Dhaka despite Faruque failing to add much to his overnight century.
KHULNA-RAJSHAHI
Jahurul struck 130 off 252 deliveries as visiting Rajshahi, overnight 36-1 in reply to reigning champions Khulna's 229 all out, raced to 303 for five at the Khulna Divisional Stadium.
Jahurul shared in two hundred partnerships, 116 for the second wicket with Farhad Hossain (51 off 129 balls) and a further 126 with captain Anisur Rahman (67 off 149 balls), during his nearly six-hour effort. He cracked 16 fours and a six before finally giving a return catch to spinner Murad Khan.
Rajshahi, with Sohrawardy Shuvo (30) and Khaled Mashud (8) at the crease, will look to a big lead to press on the home side.
CHITTAGONG-SYLHET
At the Chittagong Divisional Stadium, the home side banked on Faisal's 129 to get within sight of bowling out Sylhet cheaply.
Resuming on 85, the Chittagong left-hander made 129 in their first-innings total of 293 before becoming touring left-arm spinner Nabil Samad's eighth scalp of the innings.
Faisal, who enjoyed the time with 21 boundaries in 267 balls, was the last man out as Chittagong added 68 runs to their overnight 225-5.
Nabil, who dismissed four batsmen in the morning, finished with 8-69 from 38.5 overs.
Since losing both their openers on 12, Sylhet never recovered and slipped to 195-9 at stumps with Saikat Ali (40) and Rajin Saleh (43) giving the total some respectability.
BARISAL-DHAKA
A fiery spell by Talha Jubair (4-30) and adequate support from his new ball partner Sajedul Islam (2-27) blew away Dhaka at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra.
Chasing Barisal's first-innings total of 274, Dhaka skittled out for 116 with Marshall Ayub top-scoring 31.
Barisal, who lost six wickets in the morning for 44 runs, were 38-1 in their second innings at close of play. Nasiruddin, who made 109 in the first innings after resuming the day on 106, was batting on 21.
