'Nominate minority candidates in 20pc JS seats'
Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad yesterday called on the political parties to nominate candidates from the minority communities in 20 percent of constituencies for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Otherwise, the minority candidates might stand in the elections as independent candidates, the Parishad leaders said at its central committee meeting.
They also urged the minority candidates to take part in the Upazila elections in large number.
Presided over by Parishad President Advocate Cyril Sikdar, the meeting also demanded restoration of the 1972 constitution.
The leaders urged the political parties to announce a 'minority package' in their election manifestoes to protect the interest and rights of the minorities.
They also called on the government, the Election Commission and all political parties to ensure that no violence against minorities take place after or before the elections.
Parishad leaders Chitta Ranjan Sarkar, Prof Nim Chandra Bhowmick, Adv Rana Dashgupta, Basudeb Dhar, Adv Parimal Chandra Guha, Narayan Biswas, Santosh Saha and Shib Prasad Ghosh spoke at the meeting held at Shaheed Tazul auditorium at Mani Singh-Farhad Smrity Trust Bhaban in the city.
