Armed criminals gunned down a wholesale paper businessman Ziauddin Lavlu last night at Sayadabad under Jatrabari Police Station.
Lavlu, 35, owner of Mahbub Enterprise at Nayabazar in Kotwali, was called out of his Larmini Street residence at Wari to Sayadabad bus stand where he was shot, killing him on the spot at about 9:45pm.
Victim's elder brother Sahabuddin Azad told The Daily Star that Lavlu went out of home at about 9:00pm after a call on his cellphone by unidentified callers.
Azad said his brother told him that he was coming back within five minutes.
But later police told them that his brother was shot dead by a gang of criminals at Sayedabad bus stand, Azad added.
Witnesses said two armed men, who came in a CNG-run autorickshaw, shot Lavlu in front of a mosque and left the spot immediately by the same vehicle.
Local people rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Police and the victim's family members could not ascertain the cause behind the killing.
Meanwhile, some unidentified miscreants killed an elderly man at his house at Madhubagh in Dakkhin Khan in the city in the early hours of yesterday.
The victim was identified as Siddique Mia, 90.
