Connectivity, trade to rule Bimstec meet in Delhi
Trade and connectivity will be high on the agenda at the second Bimstec summit in New Delhi on November 13.
Bimstec, which stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, groups Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The one-day summit is expected to focus on closer integration of the member-countries. Current trade among them is estimated at $20 billion.
Other areas to feature prominently at the meeting include counter-terrorism, trans-national crimes, tourism, fisheries and public health.
Bimstec leaders will also review progress made towards a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) among the member-countries.
A framework agreement for the FTA, which covers goods, services and investment, was signed at the first summit in 2004.
