Nation mourns leaders killed in jail
The 32nd anniversary of the 'Jail Killing Day' was observed in the country yesterday commemorating the assassination of four national leaders inside the Dhaka Central Jail.
The four liberation war heroes -- Syed Nazrul Islam, acting president of 1971 Bangladesh government in exile, Tajuddin Ahmed, prime minister of the same government, M Mansur Ali, finance minister, and AHM Qamruzzaman, minister for home affairs, relief and rehabilitation -- were shot dead inside jail on this day in 1975.
To mark the day, Awami League (AL) and its front organisations, including Juba League, Swechchasebak League, Awami Mohila League, Jatiya Sramik League, Krishak League, Bangabandhu Sanskritik Jote, National Four Leaders Association, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Projanmo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League, arranged various programmes.
AL leaders and activists wore black badges and placed wreaths on the graves of the national leaders at Banani Graveyard and offered special prayer, seeking eternal peace of the departed souls. Earlier, they laid wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Besides, AL yesterday held a discussion meeting at Dhaka Engineers' Institute in the capital where top leaders of the party addressed.
