Stocks in thin trade
Dhaka stocks started the week with a big slump amid thin participation of investors, apparently worried by fallout from the lingering world market rout.
The market declined a day after some discussants told a seminar that Bangladesh would not be immune to the global financial meltdown and its negative spillover.
Although there is no relationship between the local and global stock markets, local investors remained cautious, said a stockbroker.
The benchmark index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSE General Index, went down 64.83 points, or 2.26 percent, to 2803.27 points. The DSE All Share Price Index also dropped 53.79 points, or 2.26 percent, to 2322.87 points.
Bad weather with continuous rains and gusty winds was part of the reason the presence of investors had been thin, said Saiful Islam, managing director of Equity Partners.
Echoing him, Yawer Sayeed, managing director of AIMS of Bangladesh, said: “There was also profit-taking in the market.”
In the opening 35 minutes, the market lost around 35 points, but the market gained more than 15 points in the next 25 minutes.
The market started declining again in the following trade and lost about 50 points in the next 110 minutes.
The market recovered 10 points in the next 35 minutes before a fall that lasted for the rest of the session.
