First kidney transplant at CMCH
A group of surgeons performed a successful kidney transplant on a patient at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday -- first of its kind outside the capital.
Two four-member teams of urologists from CMCH and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) transplanted the kidney in the 19-year-old patient, Md Ali Abbas, under the supervision of Prof Deepti Chowdhury, head of Nephrology Department of Chittagong Medical College.
Abbas, who hails from Ashia under Patiya upazila in Chittagong, received a kidney from his mother Julekha Begum during the three-and-a-half-hour operation.
Both the recipient and the donor are now out of danger and doing well, sources said.
