7 autorickshaw lifters arrested in Chittagong
Police arrested seven CNG-run autorickshaw lifters, including the gang leader, in the port city yesterday.
According to the allegation of one Md Kamrul Islam, an autorickshaw owner, Kotwali police led by Assistant Commissioner Babul Akhter raided Sat Rasta intersection at around 11:30am and arrested the gang leader Mintu, police said.
Sources said Kamrul had filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station in connection with the lifting of his autorickshaw on October 10 from the old Bandarban bus stand under Panchlaish.
The complainant in his case alleged that a person identified as Mintu called him over his cell phone and demanded Tk 70,000 in exchange for the vehicle. The autorickshaw owner informed the police of the matter.
Accordingly, Kamrul went to Sat Rasta intersection yesterday at around 11:00am and gave Tk 40,000 to Mintu, while police, who took a position in the area from before, chased the cheat and arrested him. They also seized the money.
According to his confessional statement, police raided Prince Hotel at Kadamtali and arrested six others of the gang -- Md Abdul Hoque Mia, 40, Md Rasel, 29, Abul Kasem, 30, Nur Hossain, 25, Babul, 40, and Sarwar Jaman Roni, 18.
Sources said Mintu confessed that he along with his associates used to lift CNG autorickshaws from different parts of the city by threatening the drivers identifying themselves as the members of law enforcement agencies or making them senseless using medicines.
Later, they used to call the owners over cellphones and demanded money in exchange for the vehicles, police said, quoting Mintu.
