Demolition of Lalon statue protested in Kushtia, Rajshahi
Various political, socio-cultural, human rights organisations, professional groups, 'bauls' and university teachers in Barisal, Kushtia and Rajshahi yesterday protested demolition of 'Baul' statues from the airport roundabout in Dhaka on October 15.
Udichi, Samannay Parishad, a local cultural organisation, Conscious Citizens Committee of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Left Front formed separate human chains in the divisional city throughout the day, said our Barisal Correspondent.
Later, a rally was held where speakers censured the government for bowing down to unjust demands of bigots. They demanded immediate re-installation of the sculpture.
In Kushtia town, socio-cultural activists formed a similar human chain while 'bauls' paraded the streets of the town by bringing out a silent procession, said our Kushtia Correspondent.
Protestors demanded of the government to build another sculpture at Kushtia, the birthplace of Lalon Shah.
In Rajshahi, 17 teachers of Fine Arts Department of Rajshahi University issued a statement protesting demolition of the statues, said our RU Correspondent. They demanded punishment of the bigots who were behind demolition of the sculpture. Teachers and students of various departments and other organisations also protested removal of the statues.
