Dance guru Jogesh Das passes away
Veteran dance guru Jogesh Chandra Das, renowned in and outside Mymensingh district died in the early hours of Saturday. He was 82.
Das, remarkable for his contribution to the field of dance for over six decades, had been suffering from various old-age complications He left behind four sons and two daughters, well wishers and many disciples to mourn his death.
He was cremated at Balashpur cremation ground on October 18. Different cultural organisations and personalities of the district expressed their grief at the demise of this great artiste.
Throughout his lifetime, Das worked tirelessly to groom talented, young artistes who can sustain the legacy of classical dance forms. One of his disciples, who has attained national and international fame, is danseuse Shamim Ara Nipa.
Born to the late Shyam Lal Das and Basana Rani Das at Kalibari Kaborkhana in the district town in 1926, Jogesh Das started taking dance lessons at the age of 17.
As a dance director he gained name and fame. He directed dance sequences in Mahua, Nakshi Kanthar Math, Rakhal Bandhu, Kabor, Janani-Janmabhumi, Mayar Khela, Shyama, Chitrangada and many more. He also performed in dance dramas and received several awards.
Das was also involved with many organisations and institutions including Alokmoy Naha Sangeet Bidyatan, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Zila Shilpakala Academy, Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College, Teachers Training College (female) and Udhichi.
