Tobacco menace
Thanks to Abdul Kuddus Rippon for his informative letter on
October 8, entitled "Tobacco and environmental hazards" where he mentioned how dangerous tobacco cultivation is for the environment and agriculture. On the other hand, tobacco smoking is a proven cause of cancer and 80 percent of the lung cancer patients are found to be smokers. Even who do not smoke also suffer from cancer through passive smoking. Now imagine how deadly tobacco is. In this regard, I must ask everyone if poisoning someone is a terrible crime, and many people have been given death sentence for poisoning, why people who cultivate, sell and spread tobacco are not being treated as criminals? Some people may argue that if we close the tobacco industry, many people will become unemployed. In that case I would suggest replacing the tobacco industry by other industries. May be those industries will be less profitable for a few hundred (or less) owners but eliminating tobacco will save millions of lives!
Now the government should decide whether it would work for the benefit of a few hundred tobacco industry owners or for the millions of people.
