Four on 5-day remand
Four people who were arrested on Sunday in connection with the case for murdering Dhandia union parishad (UP) chairman Arifuzzaman Chanchal were placed on a five-day police remand on Thursday.
The accused are Humayun Kabir and Zobeda Khatun of Village Sarulia in Tala upazila in Satkhira, Rabiul Islam Sardar of village Shankarpur in Jhikargachha upazila and Shawkat Ali of village Joypur in Manirampur upazila in Jessore.
Court sources said, Following a prayer for seven-day remand by Patkelghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Daud Hossain, also the investigation officer, the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court granted five-day remand on Thursday.
Arifuzzaman Chanchal, chairman Dhandia union parishad in Tala upazila, also a member of district BNP convening committee, was abducted and strangled to death early Sunday and police arrested the four people shortly afterwards.
Meanwhile the same court after a long hearing on Thursday rejected the remand prayer submitted by police for seven-day remand for 12 local leaders and activists of BNP who were arrested early morning on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in arson and looting incidents at the houses of two local leaders of BNP and its front organisation.
On that day, over three thousand aggrieved people set fire to the houses of Dhandia UP member Abdul Malek Lalu of village Senergati and Ruhul Quddus of village Krishnanagar in Tala upazila suspecting their involvement in the killing of UP chairman Chanchal.
