Mohiuddin suspends some CCC activities
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in an office order has suspended some official activities of the city corporation.
The mayor, who was released on bail from prison on October 8, signed the order at his hospital bed at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BMSSU) where he has been undergoing treatment, sources said.
In the order that reached the CCC yesterday, Mohiuddin suspended until further notice all activities including promotion, demotion and appointment of staffs, tender-related activities and payment of outstanding bills of the contractors.
The sources said Acting Mayor M Monzur Alam, who was in-charge of the corporation since Mohiuddin was arrested on March 7 last year, received the office order and informed top officials of it yesterday morning.
When contacted, the acting mayor, however, said he did not receive any such order.
Replying to a query, he said, "As he (Mayor Mohiuddin) is still the mayor as per law, he has no problem to take charge of his office again."
When contacted, CCC CEO Md Shamsuddoha, who is now in Dhaka on an official tour, said that he heard of such an office order but knew nothing about its content.
"I came to Dhaka on Saturday afternoon in connection with a government order regarding the mayor. Hopefully I would get the order by tomorrow (Monday) and hand it over to the mayor so that he can go abroad," the CEO said.
Both Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Monzur Alam belong to Awami League. Mohiuddin is the president of Chittagong city AL while Monzur Alam is an AL-backed councillor from Kattali Ward under Pahartali Police Station.
