Ziaul Haq Zia's property to be attached
A Dhaka court yesterday ordered attachment of all property of former state minister for LGRD and cooperatives Ziaul Haq Zia and his wife Nasima Haq for concealment of wealth information and tax dodge.
Meantime, another Dhaka court yesterday directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to submit the probe report on a graft case against BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman, his wife and mother-in-law by October 27.
CASES AGAINST ZIAUL COUPLE
Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque at the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the attachment order of the Ziaul couple's property as they did not comply with the court's earlier order to appear before it.
Assistant Commissioner of Taxes at National Board of Revenue (NBR) Farzana Sultana filed the case against the former state minister on September 23 on charges of evading income tax for years.
The plaintiff in her case statement complained that Ziaul in his tax returns between 1980-2007 concealed information on wealth and property worth Tk 5.24 crore. The former state minister also evaded taxes payable on the concealed property and wealth, she added.
Another assistant tax commissioner at the NBR, Pankaj Lal, filed the case against Ziaul's wife Nasima the same day, alleging that she evaded tax worth Tk 44,85,973 from 2002 to 2007.
Nasima also concealed information about Tk 1,77,93,483, the complaint said.
CASE AGAINST TARIQUE
Metropolitan Magistrate Mizanur Rahman set the date for submission of the probe report on the case against Tarique, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and mother-in-law Iqbalmand Banu after accepting the first information report (FIR) of the case.
ACC Deputy Director Zahirul Huda in his case filed with Kafrul Police Station on Wednesday accused Tarique of concealing information about property worth over Tk 4.23 crore in his statement to the anti-corruption watchdog and earning an estimated Tk 4.82 crore wealth illegally.
Zubaida Rahman and her mother were accused of abetting Tarique in the crime by claiming that the ill-gotten money was earned through legal means.
Tarique submitted his wealth statement to the anti-graft body on June 10 through the jail authorities, showing that he, his wife and daughter have Tk 1.37 crore in assets.
The joint forces arrested the BNP leader, already accused in seven extortion cases, on March 7 this year at his mother's cantonment residence and has since been detained in Dhaka Central Jail.
Khaleda Zia and her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko were also arrested on September 3 on graft charges.
