Bar Council polls Nov 20

The election of Bangladesh Bar Council will be held on November 20.
The Bar Council authorities at a meeting recently announced the schedule.
The polling will be held from 10:00am to 5:00pm on the premises of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and all the civil courts at the districts and Bajitpur, Ishwarganj, Durgapur, Bhanga, Chikandi, Patia, Satkania, Fatikchhari, Sandwip, Hatia, Nabinagar and Paikgachha Police Stations.
The nomination papers of the candidates will have to be submitted to the Bar Council office between 10:00am and 4:00pm from October 12 to 14.
Nomination papers will be scrutinised on October 23 while the last date of withdrawal of the candidatures is October 26.
Sources said over 25,000 lawyers of the country registered with the Bar Council will cast their votes in the election to elect 14 members of the council.
The elected members will select one of them as the vice chairman of the Bar Council who discharges as its chief executive.
The attorney general, the top law officer of the government, functions as ex-officio chairman of this statutory of the lawyers.
The election of Bar Council was held for the last time in May 2004 and the tenure of the elected committee expired on June 30, 2007.
An ad-hoc Bar Council appointed by the present caretaker government has been functioning since the tenure of the elected committee expired.
