DSE perks up ahead of Eid
Buying and selling sprees of investors pulled Dhaka stocks up yesterday.
Ahead of a nine-day Eid vacation, starting on Friday, the investors remained busy rearranging their portfolios. Many among the investors were selling their shares in view of expenditures on the occasion of Eid, market operators said.
The recent increase in liquidity supply to the stock market also helped the market with an upward trend in the last few days, said a stockbroker.
The benchmark index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSE General Index, rose 24.89 points, or 0.85 percent, to 2925.45 points, while the DSE All Share Price Index increased 19.45 points, or 0.79 percent, to 2463.78 points.
During the first 15 minutes of trading, the market gained about 26 points. The pace of gain slowed quite a bit and the market gained another six points in the next 45 minutes. In the next 30 minutes, the bourse gained another six points.
The market started to come down at a slow but steady rate. The movement continued for the next 75 minutes, losing about 11 points. The market remained more or less at the same level for the rest of the session.
Turnover also increased to Tk 430.44 crore from the previous day's Tk 353.93 crore. A total of 3,00,21,098 shares changed hands on the premier bourse.
Most listed securities traded on the prime bourse. Of the 224 traded issues, 143 gained, 72 declined and nine remained unchanged.
Banking sector ended mixed, while most of the non-banking financial institutions and mutual funds gained.
Most companies in the energy sector lost, while pharmaceuticals sector ended as a gainer with many companies gaining significantly.
Cement and insurance shares ended mixed.
Market capitalisation rose to Tk 1,02,758 crore from the previous day's Tk 1,02,122 crore.
Beximco Pharma topped the turnover list with 33,51,450 traded shares worth Tk 42.97 crore. The day's other turnover leaders were Beximco, ACI, Titas Gas, Grameen 1 Scheme 2, AIMS 1st Mutual Fund, ICB 2nd NRB Mutual Fund, Summit Power, Prime Finance, and Lanka Bangla Finance.
Chittagong stocks also closed higher yesterday. The CSE Selective Categories Index rose 53.4 points, or 0.92 percent, to 5796.73 points. The CSE All Share Price Index gained 71.61 points, or 0.81 percent, to 8860.32 points.
A total of 62,27,634 shares worth Tk 58.19 crore changed hands on the port city bourse. Of the 137 traded issues, 86 gained, 45 declined and six remained unchanged.
