Police beset with limitations: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad yesterday said the police department is beset with limitations and if police serve people up to their expectations, people will raise their voice to remove the limitations.
The IGP, who expressed frustration on Monday about the delay in promulgation of the Bangladesh Police Ordinance 2007, however said they are hopeful about the promulgation of the ordinance.
The IGP said this while inaugurating two new police stations -- Darussalam and Kadamtoli -- in the city yesterday that raised the total number of police stations in the city to 35. Six more police stations will be set up in the city soon.
On Monday, the IGP said, "We are saying that we will correct ourselves. Give us a chance to reform. You are not giving us the chance. I must say that it is not being done because it might affect someone's interest somewhere."
“We are hopeful about the approval of the ordinance… work is going on. From my position I have nothing to do but express hope," the IGP said.
When asked yesterday where the draft ordinance is stuck, Nur just gave a smile and did not make any comment.
Referring to traffic police and patrol police, the IGP said, "Despite their hard work, if any crime takes place or traffic jam is created on a road, every one blames police as if police department itself has done this.”
He noted that members of the public have a negative perception about police department, which traditionally has a bad reputation.
The IGP said once police stations were rendezvous of criminals and miscreants but that situation has now changed. He, however, admitted that people still feel hesitant to complain against those police personnel who cause them sufferings.
The police chief urged people to come forward to participate in community policing, and join the Open House Day meetings held at police stations to hear complaints from them and seek their advice in addressing those.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed said activities of brokers and middlemen in police stations have declined.
He also said harassment of people through arrest has also decreased as no one is now arrested without verifying the allegation against him/her. The number of daily arrests has now declined to 100 from 400 in the past.
