Hasina's lawyers submit bail bond
Lawyers of former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina submitted a bail bond in Tk 2.99 crore extortion case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury.
Hasina's cousin and co-accused Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, who was released on bail on Monday, also submitted his bail bond to the special court.
Judge M Ashraf Hossain of the Special Court-5 accepted the bail bonds and fixed October 26 for next hearing in the case.
The court accepted Hasina's Tk 30,000 lakh bail bond with advocate Sahara Khatun presented as the advocate surety and barrister Fazle Nur Tapash as the local surety.
The same legal representatives submitted the bail bond on behalf of Sheikh Selim.
On September 16, the High Court (HC) granted three months' ad interim bail to Hasina and Karim Selim in the case. It stayed the case proceedings against Hasina until October 19.
Being freed on bail, Sheikh Selim was produced before the court yesterday.
Azam J Chowdhury, managing director of Eastcoast Trading Pvt Ltd, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station against Hasina and her cousin Sheikh Selim on June 13 last year on charges of extorting Tk 2.99 crore from him in exchange for awarding a contract to set up Siddhirganj Power Plant.
On June 15 this year, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court sent the case to the Special Court-5 for its quick disposal.
Hasina's younger sister Sheikh Rehana, who lives in London, was included in the charge sheet and shown absconding.
