Life members of Satkhira Red Crescent Society yesterday held a meeting and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner protesting a plan by its local officials to convene a general meeting of the society to form a 'pocket committee' with BNP-Jamaat men.
The meeting, called on September 25, is a conspiracy to politicise the local unit of the international humanitarian organisation. The planned meeting will also violate its constitution as most general members of the society were not invited, they said in the memorandum.
They also urged the administration to stop the meeting convened by some 'vested quarters'.
The life members alleged that as part of a conspiracy, the meeting has been convened at Kharibilla, about five kilometers off the district town so that they can form the unit committee with their party men without any opposition.
The meeting, held on the premises of Satkhira Press Club, was organised by the newly formed Action Committee with its convenor Abdur Rahim in the chair.
It was addressed by, among others, former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Monsur Ahmed, Satkhira Pourasava Mayor Sheikh Ashraful Haque, Prof Abu Ahmed, Advocate Mustafa Lutfullah, Sheikh Nizam Uddin, Kalyan Bannerjee, Ramkrishna Chakraborty, Saiful Karim Sabu, Touhidur Rahman Dablu and Kazi Moina.
They said most of life and general members are yet to get notice of the September 25 meeting.
A pocket committee of the local unit of the society was also formed during the rule of BNP led four party alliance government.
AS per Article 13 and 21 (vi) of Bangladesh Red Crescent society constitution, notice should be given to life members and general members at least 15 days earlier. But this was not followed, which violates the constitution , they said.
They said acting president of the society Dr Shahidul Alam, also a central leader of DAB, secretly distributed 1500 forms among BNP and Jamaat members for their enlistment as general members.
