12 killed in road accidents
Twelve people were killed and 14 others injured in separate road accidents in Bogra, Narayanganj, Sirajganj, Rajshahi and Brahmanbaria in the last two days.
Our staff correspondent in Bogra reports: Five people were killed when a speeding passenger bus hit a three-wheeler and a rickshaw van at Mirzapur Bazar in Sherpur upazila yesterday evening.
One of the victims was identified as Abul Kalam Azad, a Grameen Bank official.
The identity of the other victims could not be known immediately.
Meanwhile, one Aghrayan Chandra Dev, 55, was run over by another bus at Adamdighi upazila in the district.
Our correspondent in Narayanganj reports: Three people were killed on the spot and four others injured when a passenger bus turned turtle near Kanchpur Bridge at Shimrail under Siddhirganj upazila yesterday.
All the victims were truck drivers who were taking rest there. The dead were identified as Mohammad Manik, Monir Hossain and Mozammel. The injured were rushed to a local clinic.
Witnesses said the passenger bus overturned when it was running through the bypass road under the bridge.
Angry drivers put up a barricade on the road and vandalised several vehicles.
Our correspondent in Sirajganj reports: Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Bogra highway at Pachilia Bazaar in Sirajganj in the early hours of yesterday.
The accident took place at around 4:30am when a bus hit a truck from behind while trying to overtake the truck.
The dead were identified as bus driver Jahangir, 23, and Rafiqul Islam, 25.
The injured were rushed to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. The condition of three of the injured was stated to be critical.
Our RU correspondent adds: A boy was killed in a road accident at Jagirpara crossing under Puthia upazila in Rajshahi yesterday.
The victim was identified as Jamil Ali, 12, son of Jamshed Ali.
The accident took place at around 9:00am when a Rajshahi-bound speeding microbus knocked his bicycle.
Police sent the body to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for autopsy.
Our correspondent in Brahmanbaria adds: A man was killed in a road accident on Brahmanbaria-Comilla highway at Nayanpur village under Kasba upazila in the district on Sunday night.
The victim was identified as Tara Mia, 50.
The accident took place when a speeding bus knocked him down while crossing the road.
Seriously injured, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
Mob seized the bus and handed over to police. But, the driver and the helper of the bus managed to flee.
