Ex-MP Swapan 'unwanted' in Agoiljhara
Conflict between different factions of local BNP is becoming more open after declaration of dates for national and upazila elections.
Agoiljhara upazila BNP declared central Information and Research Secretary and former lawmaker Zahir Uddin Swapan as persona non grata in his constituency.
Jubo Dal factions supported by central Jubo Dal Secretary Syed Moazem Hossain Alal and district BNP President Mojibur Rahman Sarwar arranged Iftar parties at the same date and venue in the city, giving rise to tension among party activists.
A meeting presided over by MA Latif Molla, Agoiljhara upazila BNP president on BHP Academy premises yesterday declared Zahir Uddin Swapan, former lawmaker of Agoiljhara-Gournadi constituency and a vocal 'reformist', as persona non grata in the area.
Anti-Swapan leaders, including upazila BNP vice president Afzal Hossain Sikdar and presidents and secretaries of union units of Agoiljhara BNP, addressed the meeting.
The pro-Swapan faction led by Abul Hossain Laltu, secretary of upazila BNP, boycotted the meeting.
Laltu termed declaring Swapan persona non grata as 'unconstitutional act' by a limited number of party men.
Factions of newly formed Barisal city Jubo Dal led by Rafikul Islam Shahin and Akhtaruzaman Shamim, president and secretary of city Jubo Dal recognized by central secretary Moazem Hossain Alal, has arranged an Ifter party at Barisal Club tomorrow.
Another group of Jubo Dal led by Abul Kalam Shahin, convener of city Jubo Dal, and followers of district BNP president Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, also former BCC mayor and lawmaker, arranged an Iftar party at the party office on the same day and time.
Arrangement of Iftar parties by the two opponent factions at the same date and time has created tensions among the pro-Alal and pro-Sarwar factions of city Jubo Dal.
