MK Alamgir sued, ex-MP Saidul, Obaidul Karim charged
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday sued detained former state minister for planning Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir for evading Tk 53.44 lakh in income tax from 2002 to 2007.
Meanwhile, the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) pressed charges against former lawmaker Saidul Haque from Brahmanbaria and Orion Group Chairman Obaidul Karim in a case filed for irregularities in importing a car and evading Tax worth Tk 85 lakh on its purchase.
CASE AGAINST ALAMGIR
NBR Additional Assistant Tax Commissioner AKM Shahadat Hossain filed the case with the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court against Dr Alamgir for committing the offences.
After the hearing, Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque recorded the statement of the complainant, took the charges into cognisance and fixed September 24 for next hearing of the case.
The court also asked the jail authorities to produce the accused before it on the scheduled date.
In his order, the judge said the charges brought against the accused were primarily found to be true and the charges were taken into cognisance for trial.
In his complaint, the plaintiff mentioned that Dr Alamgir had concealed information about his wealth worth Tk 2,12,58,602 from the NBR department and evaded Tk 5,344,671 in income tax from 2002 to 2007.
Dr Alamgir, accused in a number of cases, was arrested on February 4 last year.
CASE AGAINST OBAIDUL
ACC Deputy Director Abdul Karim submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in the case filed against Obaidul and Saidul for irregularities in importing a car and evading Tax on its purchase.
Karim, the investigation officer (IO) of the case, showed 23 people as prosecution witnesses.
He appealed to the court for issuing arrest warrant against Obaidul Karim and the order to attach his properties. Earlier, Saidul Haque was granted bail by the High Court.
In the charge sheet, the IO mentioned that the charges brought against the two were primarily proved and they should be brought under trial.
The commission filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against Obaidul Karim and Saidul Haque on August 9 last year for committing the offences.
