At least 50 people, including six cops, were injured in a fierce clash between two groups of villagers at Sridhora village under Bianibazar upazila on Friday night.
Witnesses said when Altab Ali, 50, of Kosba village went to Sridhora Bazar for buying fish, he locked into an altercation with fish-seller Abdul Jabbar.
At one stage, some people of Sridhora village beat up Altab, leaving him seriously injured. He was admitted to upazila health complex and later shifted to Osmani Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Hearing the news, people of Kosba village, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked the people of Sridhora village that triggered a fierce clash between the people of the two villages.
Some people of Sridhora village set fire to Mokur Ali Market at Kosba village and looted shops. In retaliation, Kosba villagers set ablaze some shops at Sridhora Bazar.
On information, firefighters from neighboring Borolekha upazila of Moulvibazar rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
As police failed to disperse the clashing groups, riot police from district headquarters rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Six cops, including two sub-inspectors, were also injured during the clash. The injured are undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex and Osmani Medical College Hospital.
