Prachyanat premiers “Kinu Kaharer Thetar”
Prachyanat now brings its 15th production titled Kinu Kaharer Thetar on stage. The premiere of the play was staged at the experimental theatre hall at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on August 18.
Written by Manoj Mitra and directed by Kaji Taufiqul Islam Imon, the play transports the audience to an imaginary country named Puttna, ruled by a fraudulent king. A comedy, the play moves forward with several humorous incidents that ultimately lead the audience to a crucial truth.
The storyline of the play unfolds with an incident where a country girl is violated by the ujir (minister) of Puttna. As the king depends a lot on the guilty, he is not interested in punishing him at all. But the problem arises when the issue threatens even the monarchy. The Company Lord (latt saheb) declares, 'If this goes without trial, 'I will abdicate the throne'. Guided by the vicious ujir, the king sets another person, Ghontakorno, to confess the guilt on behalf of the ujir. Ghontakorno and his wife are also happy as they are compensated well with 'four bags of money' by the king. But situation does not remain the same when the king himself gets into a similar kind of trouble. All of a sudden the king gets entangled in problems for killing a goat. The Lord manages to sentence him to death by hanging. Even Ghontakorno cannot save the king this time.
“Though an imaginary country, Puttna is like present-day Bangladesh. The king, the ujir, The Company lord, Ghontakorno and others remind us of the political hypocrites, the problem faced by our judicial system and, of course, the plight of the common people,” said Kaji Toufiqul Islam Imon.
Mitul Rahman, Nasiful Walid Amlan, Rantik Bipu, Hira Choudhury, Rinkon Shikdar, Bilkis Jahan and others play different roles in Kinu Kaharer Thetar. The light design of the play was effectively done by Abul Hasnat Bhuiya Ripon. Rinkon Sikder's set design complemented the production. This acclaimed play by Manoj Mitra has been staged before by several other theatre troupes.
