'Religious leaders, NGOs can help fight HIV/AIDS'
Information Secretary Jamil Osman yesterday said religious leaders and non-government organisations (NGOs) can play a vital role in sensitising people about HIV/AIDS.
Statistics on HIV infection is in favour of Bangladesh, but more efforts are needed to combat the spread of the deadly virus, he added.
He said this at the opening of a two-day training consortium on HIV/AIDS at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PID) office in the city.
The consortium was jointly organised by health and family welfare ministry, Padakkhep Manabik Unnayan Kendra and Save the Children-USA to sensitise officials and trainers of different departments and institutes under the information ministry about HIV/AIDS, says a PID handout.
The secretary said intensive monitoring and evaluation of the impact of HIV/AIDS prevention programmes should be in place, adding that an effective communication strategy can deliver better result in the fight against the spread of the virus.
Padakkhep Executive Director Iqbal Ahammad chaired the training consortium.
Additional Secretary to Information Ministry Md Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury and Joint Secretary Kamaluddin Ahmed and Padakkhep Adviser Shahjahan Muzamdar also spoke on the occasion.
