SCC ward councillors fail to select 3-men mayoral panel

The newly elected ward councillors of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) have failed to select the three-member panel for mayorship to run the office in absence of the mayor.
They also failed to reach a consensus either to make the panel through voting or negotiation.
However, the councillors formed a 12-member committee either to finalise a short list or make the panel on the given criteria, sources said.
Six councillors expressed their intention for mayoral panel-I. The members are -- Azizul Haque Manik, Abdul Khalique, Rezaul Hasan Lodi, Md Shahjahan, Dinar Khan Hashu and Mujibur Rahman Shaokat.
Four women councillors intended for panel-II (female). They are Saleha Khatun Shepy, Shahan Ara Begum, Salma Sultana and Shahan Ara Shanu.
Another four councillors for panel-III are Mujibur Rahman Kamran, Shantanu Dutta Shontu, Selim Ahmed Rony and Abdur Raquib Bablu.
The 12-men body of the councillors had been asked to file their suggestions by 25 September, failing on which there will be voting for selection the 3 panel mayors, sources informed.
Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran chaired the first SCC meeting while all the 36 councillors including nine female members were present.
SCC Chief Executive Officer Kazi Abdul Nur told the Daily Star that there were attempts to select the panel through negotiations, but the efforts came to naught.
However, the 12-men committee had been asked to submit their suggestions by September 25.
Sources said most of the councillors are divided politically. Among the councillors, 17 are from the AL tickets, 15 from BNP-Jamaat and the rest are non-partisan.
