University and politics
I am very much encouraged to go through the letter written with reference to my earlier letter on the above subject by learned Professor Ahmed S. Islam. (Ref: his letter, DS, Sept. 10, 2008). I would like to extend my sincere thanks to him for re-opening communication on the above subject. He has quite correctly evaluated the present campus situation while comparing it with the previous conditions.
To speak frankly, often I say that in present days the objective of education is no more “acquiring knowledge” or “to perpetuate a sound mind in a sound body”, it's now become a commercial venture wherein parents invest money to let their wards earn a certificate (in the form of degree/diploma) and then become an earning unit. Politics has added extra charm to the students as well as faculties to earn 'bonus' out of their investment.
Nowadays both academics and students have only a limited time to run the teaching and learning process. To get out of this situation, our politicians must come forward with a minus-campus formula for running their politics!
