Form body to review JU syndicate decision
Fifteen eminent personalities yesterday strongly protested the decision of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) syndicate exonerating a teacher of charges of sexual harassment.
In a joint statement, they expressed shock saying that the decision was taken on the basis of a report submitted by the probe committee whose impartiality is questionable, as its members are the colleagues of the accused teacher.
They called on President Iajuddin Ahmed, who is also the chancellor of the university, to form a high-powered independent and impartial commission to review the decision and, if necessary, to conduct a fresh investigation into the allegations against drama & dramatics department chairman Sanowar Hossain Sunny.
They also said the statement -- "Allegations were not proved beyond doubt" -- mentioned in the syndicate decision is inconsistent with the legal decisions made by the High Court in similar cases.
They also demanded that the probe report and the syndicate decision be made public through the media.
The signatories to the statement are Prof Khan Sarwar Murshid, Prof Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury, Prof Hasan Azizul Haque, Justice Golam Rabbani, Sultana Kamal, Ayesha Khanam, Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Syed Abul Maksud, Kamal Lohani, Prof Abul Barakat, Prof MM Akash, engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, Prof Anu Muhammad, and Prof M Shamsul Alam.
