Four Rab men including an Assistant Superintendent of Police sustained serious injuries as they came under a sudden attack while returning with four arrested drug peddlers.
The attackers also snatched away three of the arrestees at a remote village in Biswanath upazila on Tuesday night.
Later additional forces of Rab and police rescued them and re-captured two of the earlier arrestees after a massive haunt in the early hours of yesterday.
With wounds on the head and right arm, ASP Sarwar is undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. His condition was improving, hospital sources said.
A 10-member Rab team accompanying a source went to arrest drug peddler Abbas Ali at village Pashchim Noagaon at about 8:00pm on Tuesday. The team kept their pick up van two kilometres away and took an auto rickshaw to reach the remote village. They picked up four people and seized 80 bottles of foreign liquor from the house. Five Rab men staying on the pick up tried to follow the attackers but the group also came under attack and revolver of a Rab man went missing during the incident.
Meantime, people carrying sticks and other weapons from the neighbouring Lohori and Ghagtia villages of Jagonnathpuir upazila in Sunamganj district joined the attack and kept ASP Sarwar, three other cops and the source detained inside a restaurant at Kolomdar market after beating them up.
Informed, a team of Rab-9 led by its acting commander and a police contingent from Sylhet reached the and rescued the law enforcers. The law enforcers caught 25 villagers during raids in the area. However, 12 of them including three women were released after preliminary quizzing.
