Bangladesh Association Norway, an organisation of the expatriate Bangladeshis living in Norway, celebrated its 30th anniversary in Oslo recently, says a press release. The daylong event included discussion and a cultural programme.
Muhammad Azizul Haque, the Bangladeshi Ambassador to the Nordic countries, was the chief guest at the event while Saera Khan, a member of the Norwegian parliament, was present as special guest. Saera Khan is the only Bangladeshi to have become a member of a European parliament.
The event began with hoisting the flags of both countries by the guests. Badrul Islam, general secretary of Bangladesh Association Norway addressed the audience with his welcome speech. “The association started its journey with a few expatriate Bangladeshis, but over the last 30 years, through its various activities, the association has been successfully representing Bangladesh in this country,” he said.
Khorshed Ahmed, president of the association, presented his paper on language titled “Mother Tongue: Natural Resource for Development.” In his paper, Khorshed Ahmed emphasised the importance of Bangla for the expatriate Bangladeshis. Expatriate writer Nirmal Kumar Brahmachari further discussed on the paper.
The association honoured three of its members for their contributions to the organisation. The award recipients are Kamaluddin Khan, the first president of the association; M. Golam Moazzem Milon, founder and Afsar Ali, a member of the association. For his remarkable contribution, Dr. Asim Kumar Duttaroy, professor, Faculty of Medicine, Oslo University, was conferred with a lifetime membership of the association.
The cultural programme featured performances by Laila Banu, production manager of Bangla TV, London. The artiste presented some patriotic and popular Bangla songs at the event. The programme also included performances by expatriate Bangladeshi artistes. Surovi Barua, teacher of the music school run by the Bangladesh Association Norway, led a group performance by her students.
