Int'l Ozone Day today
The International Ozone Day will be observed in the country as elsewhere across the world today with an emphasis on global efforts to protect the ozone layer of the earth.
Bangladesh has been observing the day since 1995 along with other member countries of the United Nations.
The ozone layer protects the planet from ultraviolet radiation, which at high levels poses various dangers to earth.
The theme of this year's International Ozone Day is: Montreal Protocol-Global Partnership for Global Benefits.
Scientists first marked the decline in the stratospheric ozone over Antarctica in 1986.
President Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed issued separate messages on the eve of the day.
In his message, the President expressed the hope that the world community would strengthen its coordinated efforts to stop the depletion of ozone layer in light with the Montreal Protocol.
The chief adviser said the developing world, including Bangladesh, has been working to reduce by 2010 the use of substances responsible for depletion of ozone layer.
He also hoped that all programmes taken in Bangladesh on the eve of the day would play an important role in protecting the ozone layer for global benefits.
Environment and Forest Ministry and Environment Directorate have taken different programmes to observe the International Ozone Day.
National dailies will publish special articles while electronic media will broadcast various programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
The Environment Directorate will decorate roads and road islands of the city with banners and festoons inscribed with the day's theme.
