Armed criminals yesterday gunned down an industrialist in broad daylight at Kakrail in the capital.
The dead was identified as Mohammad Abdus Salam alias Babu, 40, a director of Yolk Garments Ltd and also a partner of Yolk Group.
The victim's family members said Babu along with his son Sanjidul Alam left his house Saj Villa at Bijoy Nagar by a car at about 7:00am and dropped Sanjidul at Oxford International School in the city's Dhanmondi.
Babu came under attack when he reached near his office on Purana Paltan Lane at about 7:30am, sources said.
Suruj Mia, a tea vendor on Purana Paltan Lane, said, "When Babu was in the lane between the Nightingale Restaurant and Islami Bank Central Hospital heading for his office by car, a youth flanked by three others greeted him. When Babu opened a window of the car, two of them fired six shots at him and left the spot."
Critically injured Babu was rushed to Islami Bank Hospital. Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Babu hailed from Rahmatpur village in Tangail.
Wing Commander Lt Col Sultan Hossain Nurani of Rab-3 said they arrested eight people for interrogation.
The victim's elder brother Sultanul Alam, also a director of Yolk Group, told The Daily Star, "There had been a dispute with a group over garment waste ('jhut') four days ago. We suspect that the group might have been involved in the killing."
Talking to The Daily Star, Mohammad Farid Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, said, "We suspect that Babu might have been killed over a feud over ‘jhut’ or a dispute among garment factory owners."
"Hired criminals might have killed him," he said adding that the process of filing a case was underway.
Sources said Rab, police, and other agencies are investigating the murder.
Babu's family sources said Babu along with his two brothers had been running family owned Yolk Group. They also have several garment factories and other business establishments.
Meanwhile, the employees of Yolk Garments staged a demonstration protesting the killing.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez went to the DMCH to show respect to the deceased.
In a press release, BGMEA Secretary General M Fasihur Rahman yesterday condemned the murder and expressed concern over deterioration in law and order.
