Take action against syndicates to check price spiral
Speakers at a discussion meeting here yesterday expressed deep concern over price spiral of essentials and sale of stale and adulterated food during Ramadan.
They urged the government to implement the Consumer Protection Act, approval recently by the caretaker government.
The meeting was organised by Rajshahi district unit of Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB).
Dr Nasrin Lubna, vice president of CAB Rajshahi presented the main keynote paper on discussion.
Rajshahi Deputy Police Commissioner (west) Sajjadur Rahman was the chief guest at the meeting presided over by Rajshahi CAB president Kazi Gias.
Shah Azam Shantonu, associate professor of Marketing department of Rajshahi University, local daily Sonali Sangbad editor Liakat Ali, and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) Deputy Director Khademul Islam also spoke.
They urged the government to take steps against syndicates who control prices and create same opportunity for all importers.
A high-power task force with units in districts should be formed to monitor markets, they said.
Local administrations, law enforcing agencies and BSTI should intensify drives against sale of stale, adulterated and unauthorised foods during Ramadan, they said.
Rajshahi Deputy Police Commissioner Sajjadur Rahman told the meeting that police monitoring of marker would be strengthened to keep prices stable.
Civil society member, government officials, NGO representatives, businessman, teachers and journalist also took part in the discussion.
