Accord to resolve major disputes thru' discussion
A two-day Indo-Bangla joint border conference ended here yesterday with an accord to resolve major disputes through discussion and by taking timely steps, officials said.
Issues relating to killing of Bangladesh nationals by Indian Border Security Force (BSF), smuggling of explosives and firearms, sheltering criminals and cross-border crimes dominated the talks.
Two sides discussed smuggling of contrabands including drugs and liquor, reinstallation of demolished or stolen border pillars, survey of disputed lands and barbed- wire fencing by the Indian authorities.
Both the sides exchanged lists of criminals as well as outlawed party leaders who allegedly took shelter in India.
High officials of Kushtia district represented the Bangladesh side while Nadia district officials represented the Indian side at the conference held at Kushtia Circuit House.
The Bangladesh side was represented by Kushtia deputy commissioner (DC) Abul Kalam, superintendent of police Mosleh Uddin, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional district magistrate Alamgir Hosain and Lt Col Sayeed Ahmed of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR).
The Indian side was represented by Nadia district magistrate of West Bengal Ankar Singh Mina, superintendent of police H K Kushumakar, battalion commander Ashim Bhayesh of Indian Border Security Force (BSF), additional district magistrate Mashir Alam and survey officer Dr Dipaknar Roy.
After the conference, Kushtia DC told journalists the talks were held in a cordial atmosphere and Indian representatives showed positive attitude to resolve the cross-border issues.
