September 2, 2007: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) files its first case against Khaleda Zia, her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko and 11 others, on charges of violating tender rules by awarding Gatco container-handling work in Dhaka and Chittagong, causing a loss of Tk 1,000 crore to the state.
September 3: The joint forces arrest Khaleda and Koko at their Dhaka Cantonment residence in the morning. She lands in jail following a court order, the first ever in a political career spanning well over two decades.
December 9: The ACC sues her for causing huge losses to the public coffers by awarding gas deals to Canadian energy company Niko. On May 5, 2008 the watchdog presses charges against 11 people, including the BNP chair, former law minister Moudud Ahmed and ex-state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain.
January 19, 2008: She is released on parole for two hours in the evening following her mother Taiyeba Majumder's death the previous night.
February 26: The ACC files case against the BNP chief and 15 others, including 10 former BNP-Jamaat coalition ministers, on charges of abuse of power in handing the operation of Barapukuria coal mine to a Chinese company. The deal allegedly caused a loss of over Tk 158.71 crore to the state coffers.
July 3: The ACC sues Khaleda, her elder son Tarique Rahman and five others for embezzlement of Tk 2.10 crore in the name of phoney Zia Orphanage Trust.
July 9: The High Court (HC) stays the proceedings of the Niko corruption case, later upheld by the Supreme Court on July 15.
July 15: The HC stays Gatco case proceedings for two months following the former premier's July 10 writ petition challenging its legality.
August 26: The HC grants four months' ad interim bail to Khaleda and Tarique in the Zia Orphanage Trust embezzlement case, following separate petitions filed the previous day.
August 28: Khaleda posts four months' ad interim bail in the Barapukuria coal mine case. Another HC bench extends the stay on Gatco and Niko case proceedings to three months more.
September 9: The HC grants three months' ad interim bail to Khaleda in the Gatco and Niko graft cases.
September 11: She comes out of the makeshift jail at 11:40am, to the cheers of thousands of BNP leaders and workers.
