UN award winner fighting for life
Shamima Khatun, a UN award winner, has been fighting for life in hospital after being inflicted grievous injuries by her husband on September 6, for protesting his extramarital affairs with another woman.
She is now undergoing treatment at Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition, said
Dr Habibur Rahman, an on-duty physician.
Shamima, a wholesaler of vegetables, was adjudged a winner of 'The Most Innovative Business of the Year' jointly organised by the Citi Group Foundation and the UN Capital Development Fund. She attended the UN gala in New York as a representative of Bangladesh at the closing ceremony of the International Year of Micro Credit in 2005.
Later, Shamima set up a clinic named 'Shamima Clinic' at Noabeki Bazar in the upazila to render healthcare service to the poor for free.
Her husband Maniruzzaman hit on her head and other parts with lethal weapons as she protested his extramarital affairs with a female patient, police said. She was immediately shifted to the hospital where she was fighting for life till filing of the report yesterday afternoon.
NGO activists and local people including Shamima herself demanded immediate arrest and punishment to the culprits.
When contacted, Shyamnagar Police Station officer-in- charge Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident.
