SC drops govt petitions from docket
The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday dropped from its case docket two government petitions for staying High Court (HC) orders that had stayed the proceedings of Niko and barge-mounted power plant corruption cases against former premier Sheikh Hasina.
Attorney General Salauddin Ahmed moved the government petitions before the vacation bench of the Appellate Division's chamber judge.
Chamber judge Justice Md Joynul Abedin retuned the petitions back to the attorney general on grounds of those being prepared improperly.
Sheikh Hasina's counsel Barrister Shafique Ahmed told reporters that the SC dropped the government petitions from its docket since those were not prepared properly.
Upon two petitions filed by Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, who is now abroad for treatment following release on parole, the HC on July 7 stayed all proceedings against her in Niko and barge-mounted power plant graft cases filed by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).
The HC also issued separate rulings asking the government and ACC to explain why the proceedings of the cases should not be quashed.
The government recently filed the two petitions with the SC for staying the HC orders.
