Jamuna embankment develops fresh breach

Another 30-metre section of a flood-protection embankment on the Jamuna at Chandanbaisha was washed away yesterday, triggering fears that a vast area in Bogra would be inundated.
Around 200 metres of the same flood-protection embankment gave in last week and affected 12,000 people destroying more than 300 houses. Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed visited the affected areas yesterday.
It is also feared that the water of the might Jamuna may merge with the Karotoa, reports our staff correspondent at Bogra.

No jobs, sky-rocketing prices of essentials due to Ramadan, waterborne diseases and poor relief efforts are putting the lives of poor people in misery even though the flood situation remains steady in most areas, reports received from different areas state.
The reports state the dire situation of people and poor relief efforts of the government. The reports also state lack of fodder for livestock, baby food and drinking water.
The Water Development Board (WDB) in a press conference yesterday said the overall flood situation in the country will start to improve after a couple of days. The situation in the eastern parts of the country will deteriorate further.
"We think the flood situation is going to improve after the next two-three days. Chances of deterioration of the flood situation are very small," said engineer Saiful Hossain, director of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
The situation in the central parts of the country is really bad as water is receding from northern parts of the country. Floods have affected 22 districts in the northern and central parts of the country and no new areas are going to be affected this season, the WDB officials claimed.
Dhaka-Srinagar-Dohar and Dhaka-Hasail highways have snapped at Munshiganj as the roads were submerged. The highways were damaged due to the strong current of water flowing over them.
The people living in chars are suffering the most, a correspondent from Munshiganj said.
Our Sirajganj correspondent reports: Many new areas have been inundated in the last 24 hours in Ullahpara and Shahzadpur upazilas. Upazila land offices, courts and Upazila Nirbahi Officers' offices are under knee-deep water.
Many have already been infected with skin diseases.
Citing family sources our Tangail correspondent reported that Sabbir, a class two student, and his sister Lisa, a class three student, drowned in floodwater at Bashail upazila yesterday. Sabbir was bathing and started to sink when his sister went to the rescue and got drowned as well around 1:00pm.
A correspondent from Madaripur reports: Minor girl Munni Akhter drowned yesterday and people on a vast area are marooned. The situation is going to deteriorate in the district, FFWC said.
Our Gaibandha correspondent reports: The flood situation remained unchanged yesterday and road communications in villages of four upazilas snapped as they went under knee- to waist-deep water. Scarcity of drinking water and food still trouble the flood-affected people.
BSS reports: The overall flood situation in Jamalpur continues to deteriorate but the situation in Rangpur is improving.
