JU students withdraw hunger strike

The agitating students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) withdrew their fast unto death programme last night following assurance from the university authorities of meeting their demands.
The demands include removal of Associate Prof Sanowar Hossain Sunny on charge of sexual harassment and formulation of a policy to check such harassment.
Meanwhile, nine of the 18 students on fast unto death to press home the two-point demand fell sick in the last two days as the programme ended on its fifth day.
Condition of one of the nine who fell sick-- Shadat Ullah Sarker-- was stated to be critical. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The others including five female students were admitted to Gonoshwastya Hospital in Savar. They are Kabir Hossain, Koushal Chakma, Al-Amin, Shakila Mahjebin Tanwi, Mashkura Rahman, Afifa Razzak Muna, Malobika Sarker Choity and Anjali Islam Shimu.
Earlier, human rights activists, cultural personalities and JU teachers negotiated between the university authorities and agitating students to bring an end to the fast unto death programme.
The agitating students also brought out processions on the campus to drum up support for their programme.
University sources said the probe body investigating the allegations of sexual harassment met yesterday and discussed depositions and statements by 43 witnesses. It is scheduled to again today.
